French Revolution Style and Design

When I was creating the logo, I was influenced by the French Design and also the traditional Barber shop style. The colours of the barber pole and the French flag are the same and I wanted to see how I could incorporate this into the logo and brand.

The target audience for a modern barber shop would be the modern day ‘Hipster’ and so I wanted to look into similar themes in French history.

A theme which is familiar with the French Revolution is the flags and how the students run the revolution and rebellion. I looked at how I could use this into the brand and design of the logo.

Another aspect I wanted to look into was French art and renaissance painting in the modern day.

I created this on illustrator with the paint tool which is the watercolour effect, the flag is to represent the revolution and is a symbol of this and utilises the French design.

When I wanted to look at the typography and font and how this would reflect the brand and style of the barber shop.

The font ‘Old Standard’ is a simple and professional and is familiar of the traditional style.

The name of the brand is long and I wanted to abbreviate the name so it will work with the logo.

Les Barbe Magnifique draft 1

This design is abstract and is influenced by the students of the French Revolution which is a style I wanted to experiment with. However, I dont think this works as a logo for a barber shop brand as it doesn’t say anything about what the business does.

I like the idea of using the French Revolution design and the colours which express this, I want to create the logo which also expresses the barber shop brand as well as the French style.

First Ideas and Sketches

I thought about the font and the type in which the traditional and modern barbers used and there is a style which is familiar to both of them, and an aspect I want to use in my design. I did a few sketches to see how I would design the logo and brand.

This is a quick sketch of the traditional style and design of the barber shop logo and type. I also looked at using the silver and Gold to create a modern look to the usually simple design styles of the vintage barbers.

Both of these logos have the similar rounded design and the colour of the Barber’s pole, they both have similar qualities to the original barber shop.

I would like to look at using Illustrator and photoshop and to see how the colours of the French Flag and also the barber pole for the logo and the brand.

I like the style of the traditional barber shops and how the modern shops use this style in a creative way to create the brand.

Modern Barber Branding Research

After looking at vintage barber branding, I wanted to look at how modern barbers vary from the classic design and style. Modern day barbers are still very relevant and have many similar qualities to the vintage design of the first barber shops.

MODERN BARBER MAGAZINE looks at the current barber news and explores new trends in men’s barber shop design and fashion.

The type used in this magazine is very classic and uses a script type font which is brightly coloured and expresses the modern features of the magazine but also keeps in with the familiar barber colour scheme and style.

The magazine shows the type of audience which use the barber services and also the bold font style and colours. Blue, Red and White are commonly used and also show the barber pole colours used in the traditional barber styles.

An example of the modern barber style is ‘Jack’s of London’ which use a modern style which has vintage and traditional design features to attract its audience. I looked at the trailer they use to advertise their brand.

The design of this trailer expresses how they are using classic features of the traditional barber shop and also uses the modern design styles to create a brand for their company.

I like the way in which modern barber shop design also uses features of traditional barber shop style and design and I would like to try and create a brand which uses this design style.

French Branding and Identity

‘Les Barbe Magnifique’ translates into The Magnificent Beard which is grande and regal and explores the themes of French culture.

After looking at the barbers pole image and the french connotations of the name, the colours specifically stood out and linked together. So I started to think about the French design and the french culture of both the history and French barber shops.

I thought about the image of the barber pole and how I could use this with the French design looking at the colours and the design.

The barbers pole and the French flag use the same colours and I wanted to look at how these two could be combined to create branding for a company.

“Red, white and blue have come to represent liberty, equality and fraternity – the ideals of the French Revolution. Blue and red are also the time-honored colors of Paris, while white is the color of the Royal House of Bourbon.”

Colour is something I would like to experiment with and explore French Culture within the design and branding and look at how vintage barbers brand their products.

Les Barbe Magnifique

When I thought about which company to create the branding for, I thought Le Barbe Magnifique would allow for creative branding and to look at historical and modern design. So when I first began to look at how I could create the design for this, I looked at the history of Barbers and how they attract their audience.

The classic design of the barber shops all involve simple graphics with the common theme of the barbers pole. I then looked into what this represents and why most barbers would involve this in their branding.

“The barber-surgeon’s pole actually originated from the rod that the poor patient grasped in order to make their veins bulge – this made it easier to cut or slice open. The brass ball at the top represented the basin that was used to collect the blood. The red and white stripes symbolised the blood soaked bandages, which would be washed then hung to dry on the rod outside the shop. The bandages would often twist in the wind, and this forms the spiral pattern we see on the barber poles of today.”

The Barbers pole represents different elements of the traditional barber techniques, both traditional barbers and modern barbers use this in their design.

I like the idea of incorporating the traditional barber style into the modern design and explore how the traditional and modern design techniques work.
